President Murmu's Helicopter Incident in Kerala: A Close Call at Hastily Prepared Landing Site

Pathanamthitta, Kerala – President Droupadi Murmu's official visit to Kerala's famous Sabarimala temple took a dramatic turn on Wednesday morning when her helicopter became stuck on a freshly laid concrete helipad that failed to support the aircraft's weight.

The Incident

The incident unfolded at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Pramadam, Pathanamthitta district, when the presidential helicopter touched down on a newly constructed landing pad. The aircraft's wheels immediately sank into the soft concrete surface, creating depressions that trapped the helicopter in place.

Quick-thinking emergency personnel, including police and fire force crews stationed at the site, responded immediately. In an unusual display of hands-on crisis management, the team manually pushed the helicopter to safety, extracting it from the sunken portions of the helipad.

Fortunately, neither President Murmu nor any members of the crew sustained injuries during the incident.

Last-Minute Changes Led to Hasty Construction

The problematic helipad was a product of eleventh-hour planning. Originally, the President's helicopter was scheduled to land at Nilakkel, but deteriorating weather conditions forced officials to identify an alternative location. The Pramadam stadium was selected as a backup site, and construction crews worked late into Tuesday night to prepare the concrete landing pad.

The rushed timeline proved critical – the concrete simply hadn't had adequate time to cure and harden before bearing the substantial weight of the presidential aircraft on Wednesday morning.

Visit Continues by Road

Following the incident, President Murmu proceeded with her itinerary via road transport, traveling to Pamba to continue her pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple. The President is currently on a four-day official tour of Kerala, running from October 21-24, which also includes visits to Sivagiri Mutt and other significant locations across the state.

Questions About Preparation

The incident has raised concerns about the adequacy of advance preparations and contingency planning for high-profile VIP visits. While weather-related changes are sometimes unavoidable, the episode highlights the risks associated with last-minute infrastructure arrangements, particularly when safety and security protocols must be maintained.

State officials have not yet issued a formal statement regarding whether any review of security and logistics procedures will be conducted following the incident. The focus remains on ensuring the President's remaining engagements proceed smoothly and safely.
